Church Holy Week Activities and Services
Holy Week is the week surrounding Easter (Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Sunday) If you’re looking for ways to observe this special time of the church year, here are some ideas… but most Christian churches will have some special services around this time, so feel free to look for other churches near you!
Palm Sunday (March 29, 2026)
Some churches pass out palm branches to children, or the whole congregations, and sing songs like “Hosanna!” in celebration of this day.
12pm Sunday, March 29 Palm Sunday Picnic at Church on the Hill. There will be a petting zoo! (We’ve attended a few events here over the years and they’ve always been well done!)
Maundy Thursday (April 2, 2026)
This day commemorates the first Lord’s Supper/Communion, and the “mandate” that Jesus gave that night to love one another.
Good Friday (April 3, 2026)
On Good Friday, churches remember the death of Jesus.
Here are some churches hosting Good Friday services or activities - you can check their web sites for more info":
Sandals Church (several locations)
Immanuel Lutheran Riverside - Taize service
Magnolia Church (by CBU)
The Grove Community Church in Riverside is hosting a Journey to the Cross experience, probably best suited for older children/teens and adults.
Easter Sunday (April 5, 2026)
On Easter Sunday, churches celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. These services are usually joyful and full of singing and perhaps some extra instruments, choirs, or kids’ activities.
Mt. Rubidoux Sunrise Service
Sunday, April 5 at 6am - Mt. Rubidoux Sunrise Service.Sunrise Easter services have been happening at the top of Mt. Rubidoux since 1909. This would be an EARLY morning for your family, but probably one you’ll never forget!
The service begins at 6am at the top of Mt. Rubidoux, so you’ll want to hike up starting by 5-5:15am. It will be very dark - if you’ve never been to Mt. Rubidoux, I would probably plan to hike Mt. Rubidoux in the daylight sometime before then so you know where to park, how to take the trail, and what to expect.
More details here, including what to bring (water, chairs, blankets), and a peek at the program from last year.
Easter Sunday Church Services
Most churches in the area will host a special service on Easter Sunday - here are a few options to consider!
Grove Community Church (Orangecrest)
Calvary Presbyterian Church - egg hunt too!
Sandals Church
Immanuel Lutheran Church - will feature strings and choir, including a singing of the Hallelujah Chorus that the congregation can join for.
Celebrate Spring
It sure feels like summer in Riverside recently with these 100 degree days, but really, spring is just beginning!
Here are some ideas for "springtime” nature activities to enjoy with your children:
Storytime at Ameal Moore Nature Center every Friday at 9:30am - this is at Sycamore Canyon, so you can do a hike too and look for wildflowers! (see below)
Look for wildflowers on a hike at Sycamore Canyon Wilderness Area. Don’t forget to stay on the trail (and do watch out for rattlesnakes). If these hot temperatures persist, I would go in the morning or early evening, as there’s virtually no shade on these trails and it will get too hot to be safe. (I personally usually only do most Southern California hikes when the temperature is forecast around 80 or lower… above that and it gets miserably hot on our exposed trails, and possibly unsafe as it gets hotter.)
Walk the trails at UCR Botanic Garden. (FYI there is quite a bit more shade here than at Sycamore Canyon).
Saturday, March 14 - 12:00-4:00pm Free Butterfly Event at the Heritage House - Celebrate the opening of A Victorian Naturalist: Riverside’s Butterfly Man at Heritage House. Tour the exhibition and step outside into the gardens for an ecologist’s dream! Stroll through a butterfly tent, spot butterflies in the gardens with a curator, illustrate an insect, and even name your own! This event is free and family-friendly. Join the first tour at 12:15 p.m. and gain insight into the exhibition from the curator. Be sure to book your tour of the house here if you want to go inside.
Saturday, March 21 - 2:00-4:00pm LiTEArature: A Fairy-Themed Afternoon Tea at the Riverside Heritage House “A faerie-themed afternoon tea party at Heritage House. Enjoy tea, sandwiches, and sweet treats in the gardens!” This event takes place in the gardens at the Heritage House and is described as whimsical and focused on “Victorian fairies.” Tickets required, and will sell out - $25/person. Tea, sandwiches, and sweet treats will be served.
Friday, March 27 11am Spring Fun Baby Storytime at Arlington Library
Saturday, March 28 10am-12pm Little Land Use Learners nature class
Saturday, March 28 - 11am-5pm The 4th Annual Citrus Festival at Citrus State Historic Park is “a family friendly event with live entertainment, various craft, food, and educational booths! There will be cooking demos, a kids theater workshop, painting, various kid activities, citrus tasting, and so much more.” I’ve heard good things about this event!
Sunday, March 29 1:00pm-4:00pm Chickapalooza at Kahoot’s Pet Store in Woodcrest. Is your family interested in raising chickens? “Join us for a day of poultry feed specials and our "Chick Chat" about raising healthy chicks, including proper feeding, housing and overall management. Chick Chat will start @1PM and live poultry sales of select breeds will be released at 2:30PM” Special sales, prizes, giveaways, kids’ coloring corner.

Where to Meet The Easter Bunny
Quite a few of the events listed above will have free photos with the Easter Bunny.
You also can go to the Galleria at Tyler Mall for professional Easter Bunny photos (personally, I’d do the free ones that include other activities for kids too, but if you can’t make it, here’s another option if that’s important to you!)
Paid Easter Activities
For the most part, many of these Easter and Springtime activities are free! Here are a few though that will cost money that you might be interested in:
Saturday, March 28 - 10 am - 12pm - Easter Egg Hunt Party at iPlayology at Dos Lagos in Corona. This looks very cute if you have little ones!
Also I mentioned these ones above but they do have a fee:
